How it works

Up and running in 3 steps

  1. Install LongPathFix

Run the installer. It is self-contained, so there is nothing else to set up.

  2. Scan a folder

Pick a folder and a path limit, and press Scan to see every problem and the planned new name.

  3. Rename and undo

Review the plan, press Rename, and use History to undo any batch.

Features

What LongPathFix does

  • Finds what breaks backups

Paths over 259 characters, trailing dots and spaces, reserved names like CON, illegal characters and case clashes.

  • Plan first

Every rename is listed before anything changes, with limits of 259, 240 or 200 characters.

  • Names only

Nothing is moved, deleted or rewritten. Names are cut with a short unique suffix and extensions are kept.

  • Undo any batch

Every rename is logged; History restores the old names, folders first.

  • Export findings

Save the findings as CSV, including why anything cannot be fixed.

What if a path is too deep to fix?

It is listed with the reason: move the folder closer to the drive root.

Why does Windows SmartScreen show a warning?

Early releases are not code-signed. Verify the installer against the published SHA-256 checksums before running it.
