A free three-page A4 size chart for steel pipe: the outside diameter and wall thickness of carbon steel pipe NPS 1/8 to 24 by schedule (ASME B36.10M), the plain-end mass in kg/m, and the wall thickness and mass of stainless pipe (ASME B36.19M), with the mass formulas, a worked example and plots of how the sizes behave. Every table value is read from ASME B36.10M-2015 and ASME B36.19M-2004 (R2015); the formulas, the worked example and the plots are computed from those values and labelled on the chart.

How to read a pipe size

Five steps to read NPS 4 Schedule 40: designators, outside diameter, wall, inside diameter and massFive steps to read NPS 4 Schedule 40: designators, outside diameter, wall, inside diameter and mass
NPS (nominal pipe size) and DN (nominal diameter) are dimensionless designators, not diameters. The outside diameter is fixed by the size; the schedule sets the wall, and the wall sets the bore.
Cross-section of NPS 4 Schedule 40 pipe drawn to scaleCross-section of NPS 4 Schedule 40 pipe drawn to scale
Drawn to scale: the wall is 6.02 mm on a 114.3 mm outside diameter, t/D=0.0527t/D = 0.0527.

With DD and tt in millimetres, the inside diameter and the plain-end mass follow from the outside diameter and the wall:

di=D−2tWpe=0.0246615 (D−t) t kg/md_i = D - 2t \qquad W_{pe} = 0.0246615\,(D - t)\,t \ \text{kg/m}

In inches the mass is Wpe=10.69 (D−t) tW_{pe} = 10.69\,(D - t)\,t lb/ft. The standard rounds WpeW_{pe} to 0.01 kg/m (0.01 lb/ft). For NPS 4 Schedule 40 (D=114.3D = 114.3 mm, t=6.02t = 6.02 mm) this gives di=102.26d_i = 102.26 mm and Wpe=16.08W_{pe} = 16.08 kg/m, the value in Table 1; in inches (D=4.500D = 4.500 in., t=0.237t = 0.237 in.) it gives 10.80 lb/ft, also the printed value.

Wall thickness by schedule

Table of the wall thickness of carbon steel pipe NPS 1/8 to 24 by scheduleTable of the wall thickness of carbon steel pipe NPS 1/8 to 24 by schedule
ASME B36.10M-2015 Table 1, wall thickness in mm; a dash means no wall is assigned to that schedule or designation. Values are as printed: the standard rounds ODs of 16 in. and smaller to 0.1 mm and larger ODs to 1 mm (NPS 18 is 457, not 457.2), and one printed wall differs from 25.4 times the inch value by 0.01 mm (NPS 1 1/2 XXS: 10.15 mm for 0.400 in.).
Wall thickness against schedule number for NPS 2, 4, 8 and 12Wall thickness against schedule number for NPS 2, 4, 8 and 12
A higher schedule number means a thicker wall on the same outside diameter, so the bore gets smaller. The schedule axis is linear.

STD, XS and the schedules

Wall thickness of Schedule 40, STD, Schedule 80 and XS against NPSWall thickness of Schedule 40, STD, Schedule 80 and XS against NPS
Standard (STD) and Schedule 40 are identical up to NPS 10; larger STD sizes have a 9.53 mm wall. Extra-strong (XS) and Schedule 80 are identical up to NPS 8; larger XS sizes have a 12.70 mm wall.
Nominal size is not the diameter: actual OD against NPSNominal size is not the diameter: actual OD against NPS
For NPS 12 and smaller the outside diameter is larger than the size number; from NPS 14 up the outside diameter in inches equals the NPS. Tube is different: its outside diameter equals the size number, and it is not covered by these two standards.

Plain-end mass and stainless pipe

Table of stainless steel pipe of ASME B36.19M with wall thickness and massTable of stainless steel pipe of ASME B36.19M with wall thickness and mass
ASME B36.19M-2004 (R2015) Table 1. The masses are the carbon-steel values: ferritic grades may be about 5 % lighter and austenitic about 2 % heavier. The standard marks some sizes as not conforming to B36.10M (Note 2): 10S for NPS 14 to 22, 40S for NPS 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 24, and 80S for NPS 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20 and 24; their 40S and 80S walls equal the B36.10M STD and XS walls, not Sch 40 and Sch 80. B36.19M rounds the ODs of NPS 10 and 12 to 273.1 and 323.9 mm, where B36.10M prints 273.0 and 323.8 mm, so a few masses differ by 0.01 to 0.03 kg/m. B36.19M prints no SI mass for NPS 18 40S and 80S (only 70.65 and 93.54 lb/ft): the chart computes 105.17 and 139.16 kg/m with the B36.10M formula and marks them.

Where the numbers come from

Every wall thickness, outside diameter and mass is read by script from the tables of ASME B36.10M-2015 and ASME B36.19M-2004 (R2015). The formulas, the worked example and the plot points are computed from those values, and the worked example is asserted against the table so a wrong formula or a parse error stops the build. After the PDF is built, a second script reads it back and compares every printed number with the data.

The chart is a reading aid. For a drawing, a purchase or an inspection report, ASME B36.10M and B36.19M are the authority. Sizes above NPS 24 for carbon steel, Schedules not shown and the other tables of the standards are in the standards.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Is the chart free?

Yes. Enter your name and email and the download link appears at once.

Which sizes are not on the chart?

Carbon steel pipe above NPS 24 (the standard goes to NPS 80), stainless pipe above NPS 30 and the other tables of the standards. Use ASME B36.10M or B36.19M for those.

Does the chart cover tube?

No. Tube is sized by its outside diameter and is not covered by ASME B36.10M or B36.19M; the chart explains the difference.
