Managing metadata in Teamcenter can quickly become chaotic if not properly governed. Having audited multiple PLM environments, I consistently see the same mistakes. Here are three best practices for Teamcenter metadata management.

1. Enforce Standardization at the CAD Level

Don’t rely on engineers to manually type “Stainless Steel 304” in Teamcenter. Use CAD templates with predefined dropdown menus. If an engineer is using Siemens NX, the material attribute should be locked to a controlled list.

2. Minimize Required Attributes

Every mandatory field is friction. Ask your manufacturing and procurement teams: What do you actually need? Often, 50% of the mandatory metadata fields in a legacy Teamcenter setup are obsolete.

3. Automate Part Number Generation

Human-generated part numbers are prone to typos and formatting errors. Implement a Teamcenter user exit or custom ITK script to auto-generate smart or sequential part numbers based on the item type.
