How We Reduced Design Cycle Time by 25%

Engineering departments often accept slow design cycles as an inevitability of complex product development. However, by strategically integrating Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and automating repetitive CAD tasks, massive efficiency gains are possible.

In my recent project leading a multi-disciplinary team, we faced a scenario where engineers were spending up to 20 hours a week just managing metadata and correcting Bill of Materials (BOM) errors.

The Root Cause

The issue wasn’t the engineers; it was the disjointed systems. Siemens NX, Teamcenter, and the company ERP were effectively speaking different languages. Engineers were forced to act as manual translators.

The Solution

We implemented three key changes:

  1. Single Source of Truth: We forced all metadata to originate in NX and flow unidirectionally into Teamcenter.
  2. Custom Validation: We built NX Open scripts that prevented an engineer from saving a part if critical metadata (material, finish, vendor) was missing.
  3. Automated Workflows: We replaced email-based approvals with automated Teamcenter workflows.

The Takeaway

Technology is only as good as the process it supports. By fixing the process first, and writing custom automation second, we achieved a 25% faster design cycle and virtually eliminated BOM errors.
