Leading Distributed Engineering Teams

Hardware engineering is traditionally an in-person discipline. You can’t easily “email” a physical prototype for someone to hold. However, as global talent pools become necessary, leading distributed engineering teams is becoming the norm.

The Communication Gap

The biggest challenge isn’t technical; it’s communication. When Team A in the US designs a casing, and Team B in India designs the internal PCB, millimeter-level miscommunications result in thousands of dollars of scrapped prototypes.

Strategies for Success

  1. A Single Source of Truth (SSOT): You cannot manage a remote team using shared network drives. A robust PDM/PLM system is mandatory. If it isn’t in the vault, it doesn’t exist.
  2. Visual Design Reviews: Utilize cloud-based CAD viewers (like Teamcenter Visualization) during daily standups so everyone is looking at the same 3D model, simultaneously.
  3. Over-Document Constraints: Assumptions kill remote projects. If a mounting hole must remain at exactly 5mm, document why in the CAD model notes.
